About Mateusz Kowalczyk-Brand

Mateusz Kowalczyk-Brand is the finance apps editor at whichapp.report. He writes the budgeting-app decision tree and owns the publication’s coverage of personal-finance software, expense-tracking apps, and the subscription-cancellation category that emerged after the Mint shutdown.

After completing his BA in Economics at the University of Chicago in 2011, Mateusz spent three years in equity research before entering Wharton’s MBA program in 2015. He completed the MBA in 2017 and the CFA charter in 2019. From 2017 to 2021 he worked as a product manager at Plaid, the bank-data aggregation infrastructure company, where he led the Auth product and watched (from the inside) the evolution of the consumer-finance app stack from Mint’s dominance through the post-Mint fragmentation that defines the 2026 category.

He left Plaid in 2021 for an independent advisory role, then joined whichapp.report in October 2025 as the founding finance apps editor. His thesis is that the personal-finance app category is dominated by a single confused question — “which app is best?” — when the right question is “which budgeting philosophy am I willing to commit to?” His budgeting-app decision tree is built around that distinction.
